CONCERT RAISES R 117 600 TO SAVE THE BEACH HUT
- The Beach Hut Trust (BHT) started in 2020 as a collaboration between local residents and national businesses and city representatives to look after the Beach Huts in Muizenberg and its surrounds.
- The trust aims to create social and economic opportunities for the local community through the Save Our Beach Hut campaign that runs throughout the year.
- Through partners who can help fundraise through collaborative projects, the trust aims to Preserve, Protect and Promote these iconic structures for future generations.
The collaboration between trusted partners resulted in a fantastic cash injection of R117 600 to the Beach Hut Trust on Sunday, 20 November, to preserve, protect and promote the beach huts at Muizenberg.
A sold-out concert with local artists Craig Hinds and Gideon Botes from Watershed at the award-winning Steenberg Wine Estate featured an array of local flavours and proudly South African wines that culminated in a memorable afternoon for guests.
Pippa Hudson from Cape Talk opened the event and described why South Africans love the beach huts: "Much like the Eiffel Tower is to Paris or the Statue of Liberty is to New York, the Beach Huts are Cape Town's most iconic structures."
The funds raised at the Steenberg concert will be used to repair and fund the maintenance of 16 more huts out of 31 at Muizenberg beach.
During the past two years, many partnerships have supported and raised much-needed funds to assist with managing the beach huts. Some of the most recent ones include the recycled shopping bags with beach hut designs funded by Pick n Pay and the Rick and Morty partnership.
"I am inspired by another impactful collaboration and innovative thinking of our local artists and partners who have put this event at Steenberg together," says founder Angela Gorman.
"It reminds me of the famous words by Brian Solis: 'Community is much more than belonging to something; it is about doing something together that makes belonging matter, she says.
