Solitaire
General Information
Solitaire is a small town situated in the Khomas region of Namibia. It provides a welcome break for those travelling across the desert and with its laid-back charm, tourists will want to spend more time here than just a quick stop.
In 1948 Christoffel van Coller built a small cottage here and being so remote was named Solitaire by his wife. In later years the settlement grew with a small shop being built along with a fuel station. The town has found popularity with the publication of the book “Solitaire” by Dutch author Ton van der Lee. Some people who have read the book specifically make Solitaire their destination.
With Solitaire situated at the junction of the Walvis Bay – Bethanie / Rehoboth – Soussusvlei roads, this little town can get quite busy in the tourist seasons. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is nearby which offers many activities for those visiting. There is also a small gravel air-strip which is occasionally used by tourism operators and self-flyers.
Accommodation
Solitaire has a motel and lodge as well as plenty of good camping areas. Please see the accommodation directory for more information on the places to stay in the area.
Businesses
Solitaire offers tourists all the necessities that one would require to travel in this remote part of the country. There is a petrol station and a place for tyre repairs which is always important in the desert.
