Geography and History

Muizenberg is a beach-side suburb of Cape Town, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated where the shore of the Cape Peninsula curves round to the east on the False Bay coast. It is considered to be the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and it is home to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

Muizenberg beach is much warmer to swim in that beaches like Clifton and Llandudno. It is flat, wide, and the water is generally calm – so is very child-friendly. It’s also a popular surfing spot, although the waves are not very big. It is ideal for body-boarders and novices.

Muizenberg is home to many examples of the grand architecture of its Victorian times when Muizenberg was an exclusive seaside resort for the rich and famous. Visit some of the museums, walk the historical mile to St James or indulge in the theatre and gastronomic culture that is expanding with Muizenberg’s rejuvenation.
