Bitterfontein is a small village located in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, South Africa. Bitterfontein is a village in the Knersvlakte, 320 kilometres (200 mi) North of Cape Town.

Although not much more in Bitterfontein than the hotel, a few shops and a railway station, the town does have its little perks and has a few interesting facts. The towns name comes from the bitter really brackish water, which is still the main source even after all these years. Because of this the town had to do something to alter the water that it provides. It therefore boasts the first desalination plant to purify drinking water for a town in the southern hemisphere. The plant and the salt pans are clearly visible from the road.

Activities and Attractions in Bitterfontein

The area is home to Martial eagles, along with several other kinds of bird life. If you would like to take part in night-drives, that can be undertaken with permission from private land-owners, a variety of animals like the Cape honey badger and black-backed jackal might be seen. A visit to the Vanmeerhof Cave on the farm Meerhof is a must see for any visitor.

The Knersvlakte, is home to more than 1300 species of succulent plants which grow to no more than 10cm in height. These can be viewed on guided tours, either on walks or by mountain bike.
