General Information on Klawer

Klawer is situated in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, South Africa. Klawer was named after the wild clover growing in the area. The town has a typical rural setting on the banks of the Olifants River. During flower season, the area is awash with colour, contrasting sharply with the arid landscape around it. The village lies just outside the slightly bigger towns of Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp.

Klawer Wine Cellar was founded in 1956, and was initially a bulk cellar. For years Klawer sold its wines on to other companies, who then bottled and resold them under their own names. Klawer has a variety of accommodation options available from Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts to Self-catering units. The nearby Doring River offers river rafting as well as hiking trails on which San rock art can be viewed.

The Southern section of the famous Cape Flower Route falls within the Olifants River Valley. Following good rains, Klawer is one of many little towns in the area which are all renowned for the extravagance of their wild flowers in August and September after the right amount of rainfall.
